The original Southern Bell Co., BellSouth is the incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC) for nine states in the South Eastern United States and has more than 20 million access lines in service.

BellSouth started in 1986 with 96,000 employees The company was acquired by AT&T (formerly SBC Communications) in 2006 in a deal valued at $67 billion. Prior to the acquisition, BellSouth owned 40% of Cingular Wireless (now AT&T Mobility), the #1 mobile phone operator in the US; the deal gave AT&T complete control of the wireless carrier.

BellSouth, now also known as AT&T Southeast, is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia and provides phone service to Alabama. Kentucky, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina. Toll free phone service through Bellsouth must be obtained through AT&T.
