Toll Free Number to Stop Underage Drinking

Omaha (KPTM) – Underage drinking is a problem that’s been going on for quite sometime.

Now, Nebraska has a tip line designed to turn in youngsters who may be part of that problem.

But do parents and kids think it will help.

“I think it’s a really good deal,” said Randy Yank.

Regarding the depletion of telephone numbers in Tulsa Oaklahoma, Michael Phillips, a Sand Springs city Oaklahoma councilman speak out on area code exhaustion.

“In an area code split, any business in the new area code would incur expenses — new business cards, new stationery, changes in periodical advertising, changes in Web site design,” Phillips said. “Plus, individuals would have expenses. Extended families in other states would have to be notified.”

Telephone Number Depletion Taking a Toll on Rural America

Tulsa area residents are divided on solutions to the shrinking supply of numbers in the 918 area code.At a town hall public hearing on the 918 area code “number exhaust” in City Council chambers Wednesday, residents spoke for and against the two options proposed to remedy the situation.

The solutions to the number exhaust issue are an area code split and an area code overlay, said officials with the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, which convened the hearing.

To overcome shortages of 1-800 numbers in the past, 888 and 877 were introduced in 1996 and 1998 respectively. Then, in 2000 the 866 numbers debuted. But toll free numbers have become such a valuable commodity that the stock is once again depleted. With an estimated five year wait before another new pre-fix is added, experts advise that obtaining a number immediately is essential.

UPDATE:  The scarcity of toll free numbers is having an impact on telecom businesses nationwide.  At&t no longer has 800 area codes available through it’s online toll free lookup tool.  A number of other providers have followed suit and stopped offering the 800 numbers to their telephone subscribers.
