New .tel domains aims to become massive phone book

Using the DNS to store such data rather than simply mapping web addresses to IP addresses is “the most significant innovation in the domain name system since the advent of .com”, according to Khashayar Mahdavi, the CEO of London-based Telnic, which is operating the .tel registry.

  1. .tel is simply put – brilliant.

this should be a mandatory element of personal and professional business all around the world.

valid, up-to-date contact information should even be an integral part of everyone’s credit score.

hopefully “the book” (telpages.com) will be up soon, kinda useless to promote a “global directory listing” without a “global directory”.

    all in good time !

  2. .tel is a great idea, very easy to find contact details.

  3. Yep, couldn’t have said it better! It’s taking a while for supporting services to get going. I’ve got 30 .tel’s I’m hoping to monetize using DotTelAds.com

  4. All, thank you for the positive comments.

Chris – the ‘global directory listing’ is the fact that the listing is under a .tel domain. This means that the internet is the directory – you can just refine the search with .tel-only search engines such as jepaa.com (third party search engine existing today) or telpages.com (arriving in the coming months). Equally, you can search for .tel domains within the BlackBerry and iPhone applications that plug into the phonebooks, and dial .tel domains from softphones such as Kiax and voipGATE.

This is of course just the start and I appreciate your ‘all in good time’ comment.

    Thanks again,

  5. I just noticed one of my .tel domains has got a number one position on google (gas safe registered engineers horsham) AND 2 number 3 positions on google all from the same domain gassaferegisteredengineers.tel

  6. ” Chris – the ‘global directory listing’ is the fact that the listing is under a .tel domain. This means that the internet is the directory ”

Telnic has shown and promoted Telpages.com as the only “TLD exclusive Directory and Search Engine” since day one, with encouragement for the Phonebook Style Domain Purchases Including Categories like Hotels.tel, Plumbers.tel etc.

The fact that the Internet is the Directory goes without saying as long as .tel is indexed like any other tld, HOWEVER the .tel tld exclusivity of Telpages.com, and its launch, is CRITICAL as the “First Global Phonebook” as shown and promoted. What a NIGHTMARE it would be not to follow through as promoted with Telpages.com ! (In spite of its many other uses)

  7. Justin, Chris is right.

Without the Search Engine, Domain Names themselves would have SEVERELY limited success.

.tel will also see limited success without Telpages.com as its PRIMARY driver.

Once it launches, you will see.

That is, if the PRIMARY driver is promoted as the priority as it should be !

  8. Thanks everyone for the strong opinions! And rest assured, Telpages.com will be launched and promoted soon. Hopefully everyone will be happy with all of the ways in which people can access them, including Telpages.com, third party .tel-only search engines, Google, third party applications and new ways in which we’ve not thought of yet.

  9. Absolutely !

The number of ways is fantastic to say the least !

Simply that Telpages.com as the “Official” starting point will be critical.

Every Solar System Depends on a Sun !

  10. Thanks Chris and Justin,

    Again, Chris’s point is just.

All the “third party” won’t make up for the fact that Telpages is the “PRIMARY GRAVITY” centering the .tel success.

Anyone can brand DNS packets and use them with the internet, or, “throughout the universe”.

Unfortunately, the “PRIMARY USE” contact information is just a million planets floating around in the universe, possibly even earning the label of “space garbage”.

Without a “PRIMARY SUN” as “CENTER GRAVITY” in Telpages.com, .tel will suffer as too unfocused for individual “planets” to be successful in the universe.

A single or group of single .tel’s does not have enough mass to successfully gather a following.

    Asteroids are the enemy.

“A rolling stone gathers no moss” comes to mind,
but, “rolling grains of sand” doesn’t even make the proverb list 😉

  11. Thanks Amy,

    I believe simply put:

“Pull It Together” in all cliche forms is the key and the necessity for .tel success.

Telpages.com is that key, no 3rd party garbage can do what the “Official Telpages” will.

This is like Yellow Pages giving people control of their “spots” and allowing them to use those spots anywhere.

Who needs Yellow Pages to do that ? If it’s a Yellow Pages spot, that’s the WHOLE point, the BOOK that it’s in !
