Caught! Driving While Talking

California’s law to try and prevent accidents seems like a ploy to make more more money for the government. This law is surely the spawn of 2007’s California SB 33 in which people under 18 were forbidden from using a cell while driving. Now everyone is faced with a fine if caught. The fine itself isn’t actually that debilitating but once you add up all the extra taxes and fees, that little fine for the first offense turns into much more than you probably expected. Remember in October 2009 when Maria Shriver, wife of governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, was caught by paparazzi driving while cell phonin’ it? How embarrassing… 90% of us can’t afford a headset because of the economy and the people that can don’t have to obey the law? Give us a break, California.

Many California Drivers are Ignoring the Hands-Free Law

Some cops say a growing number of drivers are ignoring the hands-free law that went into effect July 1. The CHP has issued more than 35,000 tickets statewide, a figure that does not include citations from city police departments. What’s happening here is what happened in New York when that state banned hand-held phones in 2001. Motorists heeded the law for a while, but police issued 142,000 tickets that year. California “Hands Free” Cell Phone Law July 1st 2008

California Senate Bill 1613 (SB1613) signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006 says, Californians will have to put down their cell phone while driving and become hands-free by July 1st 2008.The new driving law, brought forward by Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, requires motorists to use a hands-free device when using a cell phone while driving.

The new California driving law will impose a fine of $20 for a first-time offense and a $50 fine for each additional offense. The bill allows exceptions for calls to law enforcement agencies for emergency purposes, or emergency services personnel while operating an authorized emergency vehicle.

In addition to these exceptions, commercial truck drivers, tow truck drivers and operators of farming vehicles are also exempt.
