Just in time for Earth Day, the California State Senate has voted on a measure that save millions of trees by cutting down on the production of phone books. In a 6-4 vote, the state Senate’s Committee on Energy, Utilities and Communications has passed measure that would allow California’s millions of telephone subscribers to opt out of receiving annual telephone books. Phone number look-up on computers and Smart phones is making phone books obsolete and the waste from an environmental perspective is enormous. Supporters pointed out that 78 million phone directories are distributed across the state annually. These paper products duplicate electronic resources.
