Fiber optics used for telecommunications is considered far more reliable than VoIP, particularly for long distance calls, because it allows for longer intervals of signal transmission without interruptions. Fiber optics provides a quality connection that ensures clarity in every call. With this technology, optical fibers are used instead of metal, reducing lost connections from electromagnetic interference.

In 1909, Farmers Mutual Telephone Company of Chapin began serving customers. Last month, the business celebrated its centennial anniversary with an open house celebration. The venture originally serviced four Michigan townships: Chapin and Brady in Saginaw County and Fairfield and Rush in Shiawassee County. As the farming community grew, lines were built throughout the area, and residents who wanted phone service were required to put up the poles themselves. As they did this, some became stockholders. Service dues were as low as $8 per year, and collected twice a year in January and July.
How times have changed…..now, any customer can instantly set up a personal toll free number that rings to any phone they choose, wherever they are, 24/7.

The proposed hike in the interstate telephone contribution that consumers might soon be paying into the Universal Service Fund was recently criticized by the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates. The increase would bring the USF contribution to 12.9% of a users bill, compared with the current 11.4%. Every telephone user in the country pays into the USF already. The monies are used to maintain and subsidize rural telephone service to places where it would otherwise be prohibitively expensive.
The USF is controlled by the Universal Service Administrative Company, and overseen by a joint board consisting of FCC and state-level commissioners.

A proposed merger of Frontier Communication Corporation and Verizon Communications, Inc. that could affect 500,000 subscribers will undergo comprehensive consumer input, including public hearings, and a close examination by state regulators. Experts say that consumers recognize that many of the advantages of 1-800 numbers outweigh standard local phone service. Toll free service is becoming increasingly common with parents wishing to keep in close contact with children and teens. Businesses with a 1-800 number can see almost instant increases in sales, word of mouth referrals, and a decrease in product returns. Standard local phone service does not provide any of these advantages.

In recent years, an average of 8,000 new toll free numbers have been doled out each day from the main database of available numbers, managed by the 800 Service Management System (SMS/800). With 800 numbers bursting in popularity while the supply of available numbers shrinks, insiders say the number of daily applications could double by the end of the year.
