Oklahoma could be the first state to offer toll free calling within its entire borders. The plan is an obvious benefit to those who make a lot of these type calls. The plan is being hot;y debated but regulators who support the idea say the plan would help encourage telecommunications investment, primarily within the state’s rural areas. This is an interesting development and one we ill continue to monitor.

866 numbers are the newest toll free numbers, released by the Federal Communications Commission in 2000 to address the shortage of 800, 888, and 877 numbers. Once consumers began to recognize the 866 pre-fix as toll free, the value of 866 soared. Recent studies indicate that 9 out of 10 consumers recognize 866 as a toll free number. The 866 numbers are more popular then ever before, increasing in demand every day.

We couldn’t help but notice how much media attention the value of toll free phone service has gotten over the past few months. More and more blogs, business magazines, and web sites are writing about the many ways toll free phone numbers help to expand and promote business, government, charities, entertainment and more. Along with hoarding, the outright sale of specific toll free numbers is likewise illegal. Some crafty entrepreneurs have attempted to skirt the regulations by “leasing” or “renting” numbers. But industry insiders say the crackdown on illegal use of toll free numbers is aimed at this practice too.

Here in this industry we field a lot of questions about telecommunications and, in particular, toll free phone service. Most notable lately are questions about whether or not new 855 area codes will become available for use. As we have stated here many times, we are still unsure exactly when the 855 numbers will be released but the buzz points to sometime within the next 12 months or so. We will see. In the meantime, we will keep all our readers posted and as soon as we hear anything at all we will let you know through this blog.

Growing concern about the limited stock of 800 numbers is creating an even higher demand for toll free service, a marketing tool that the FCC says is “proven” to increase business. In fact, studies show that telephone orders can increase up to 60 percent and word of mouth referrals can rise by 200 percent. With stats like that, industry insiders are not surprised by the emergence of a black market for 800 numbers.

Stories about people getting caught trying to illegally broker valuable toll free phone numbers are rampant and not only is the FCC and other agencies paying close attention, so are we. There are strict guidelines over the distribution and use of toll free phone numbers. But with supplies so limited, people are desperate for this remarkable marketing tool. And so others prey on the need. But if new toll free area codes were released, supplies would increase and these improper practices would diminish. The way to stop this is two-fold: increased FCC crackdown and the release of 855 numbers.
