Call identifying information. Call identifying information means dialing or signaling information that identifies the origin, direction, destination, or termination of each communication generated or received by a subscriber by means of any equipment, facility, or service of a telecommunications carrier. Call identifying information is “reasonably available” to a carrier if it is present at an intercept access point and can be made available without the carrier being unduly burdened with network modifications.

Among the most frequently asked question we get as experts in telecommunications field is: Can i still get a decent custom toll free phone number with the existing four area codes? Or should I wait to sign up until the new area codes are released. The answers are a resounding YES and NO in that order. Subscribers can still get a good custom number. They need to research providers and find one that has access to a good stock of custom options. And NO..there is no reason to wait. A toll free number is affordable and produces better recognition of a company and expands potential revenue. So the advice within the industry is to get one now, and another if needed when the new area codes are released.

Airline toll free numbers have been ultra-busy over the past couple of weeks as inclement weather, holiday travelers, and a recent terror attack increased phone traffic between passengers and carriers. Nationwide, airlines reported a significant hike in calls to their toll free phone numbers as concerned passengers checked on flight delays, cancellations and new security rules.

There is an enormous business benefit to owning a memorable vanity toll free phone number. But, subscribers should be given the practical advice that to include the numerical equivalent in some ads near the vanity number. It is also advised that if the majority of your potential customers are senior citizens or teens, including both options (vanity and numerical equivalent) is likewise a good business practice.

Toll free numbers enable callers to reach businesses, organizations, and non-profits without having to pay for the call. This marketing tool has been so successful that the available 1-800, 888, 877, and 866 numbers are decreasing while demand is growing at unprecedented rates.

In 1991, the Federal Communications Commission enacted a regulation that made 1-800 numbers ‘portable’—this simply means the number can be moved from carrier to carrier. (This is referred to as “porting” the number.) The idea was that subscribers should never have to worry about losing control of their preferred phone number if they switch carriers and they should never be locked into inferior service.

UPDATE: The scarcity of toll free numbers is having an impact on telecoms nationwide. AT&T no longer has 800 area codes available through it’s online toll free look-up tool. A number of other providers have followed suit and stopped offering the 800 numbers to their telephone subscribers.

We here at the SMSGOV recently saw an article in the Times about the new trend toward mobile offices replacing the traditional office space. Professionals and salespersons are ditching their expensive office space and running their business from their cars. With a laptop, cell phone and a toll free number, they can travel anywhere and stay in touch with clients. No rent, no utility bill. Everything they need is in their vehicle and with a toll free number, customers and clients can reach them anywhere at any time. When they go home, the whole office goes inside with them.
