Due to the ongoing scarcity of 800 area code phone numbers, recent reports are indicating that phone companies are beginning to raise the cost to obtain 800 numbers.

Many providers are expected to follow suit.

Coordinated by the Administration on Aging, this service may offer free or low-cost legal advice, assistance or access to legal representation to people over the age of 60. In March 1998, the FCC ordered the fair distribution of vanity toll free numbers. The Commission concluded that assigning vanity numbers would be on a first-come, first-served basis to ensure fair allocation of numbers. The FCC decided that “a first-come, first-served process is also the most efficient method for assigning toll free numbers because it is the most easily administered and least expensive way to allocate numbers.” The FCC also announced that the the first-come, first-served system avoids disputes among subscribers over who is entitled to a particular number

Telecommunications industry sources now say an unthinkable embargo on new toll free phone service in the United States is a real possibility within the next year. To offset the anticipated impact of this scarcity of 1-800 numbers, the Tollfree Advisory Committee strongly recommends the release by the FCC of the reserved toll free area codes in 2010.

Phone Service May Be Put on Hold in the U.S.

When toll free service first became popular, a handful of 1-800 hotlines were established. Now, there are millions of 24-hour hotlines offering assistance for people in almost any circumstance.

Politics and Toll Free And Immigration Concerns

Once again politics and toll free phone lines are going hand-in-hand. Following the controversial Arizona illegal immigrations law, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials received nearly 100,000 calls to the toll free phone tip line from Oct. 1 through the end of April 2010. At this point in the previous fiscal year, the number has been reported as below 64,000. The tip line was started in 2003 as part of Operation Predator, a campaign to crack down on international child pornography and child sex tourism.
