It has been a decade since a new toll free telephone area code has been released. The last time a new toll free telephone number was released, stock was limited, interest was growing and the economy was changing. The same situation is happening now and a new toll free area code, specifically the 855 numbers, would generate millions of new toll free possibilities for companies and for personal use throughout the United States and Canada. Discussions about the imminent release of 855 are abundant and we hope that the numbers are allowed into the system soon.

We got a kick out of the fact that toll free numbers were a category on the television quiz show Jeopardy last night. And the contestants knew most of the answers. Toll free telephone numbers–especially vanity numbers–stick in the minds of consumers. Toll free is everywhere and its popularity is growing.

The newest government toll free number aimed at keeping residents informed is one established on June 9 by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The federal government begins mailing $250 tax-rebate checks today to seniors in Medicare prescription drug program. But feds are warning seniors that scam artists already are targeting the payments. Federal officials are getting reports of scam artists contacting seniors asking for personal information to get the checks — including Medicare, Social Security or bank account numbers. Anyone who has received a scam call should call the toll free number 800- 633-4227.

Word of potential rationing of toll free numbers has been floating through the gossip mill lately. Rationing of toll free numbers is not a new concept. After 800 numbers ran dry in 1995 the federal government rationed numbers until the 888 numbers were launched a year later. Toll free service is essential for every business trying to get a competitive edge in tis economy. Insiders are concerned that if the existing available 800 numbers are rationed, some businesses could lose a viable marketing strategy.
