Widespread concerns about the dwindling supply of toll free numbers may not be addressed anytime soon. According to sources at the 800 Service Management System (SMS/800) the reserved 855 pre-fix, intended to restore stocks of toll free numbers, may not be released by the Federal Communications Commission for several years. In fact, industry insiders say the release of 855 may be put off until 2011.

How many new toll free phone numbers will the pending 855 area codes provide us? A lot. Millions. There are 10,000 new numbers with each digit sequence. For instance, 855-111-???? would give us 10,000 new numbers. Many sequential digits are removed from the equation so the number is not an absolute. However, these millions of new possibilities would offer businesses many marketing options and help companies reach consumers in the best way possible–through a toll free phone call. Subscribers will be able to add additional toll free numbers or get brand new ones with the 855 area code. Its been a decade since the previous toll free area code was released. It is time for 855.

855 toll free phone numbers are still held in abeyance. We hear that the release could be as early as next year but nothing has been confirmed. We do know that the new toll free area codes (855, 844…) would allow millions of new toll free combinations for business owners and for personal users of toll free. The new numbers would allow for creative new custom numbers not currently available. The release of 855 area code phone numbers in 2011 is a good idea for the US economy and we hope the rumors are true. The minute we hear any confirmation we will advise our readers so they can contact toll free service providers to arrange for their new numbers.

We continue to read stories in the news about the improper distribution and selling of valuable 1-800 numbers. This practice grows as the number of custom numbers decreases. The best way to curb this activity is to release the 855 area code toll free phone numbers for public use. This would ease the strain and allow for proper use of toll free. There are strict guidelines over the distribution and use of toll free phone numbers. But with supplies so limited, people are desperate for a custom number that suits their image. When new toll free area codes are released, supplies would immediately increase and these improper practices would diminish. As we have endorsed in the past: the way to stop these illegal behaviors is two-fold: increased FCC crackdown and the release of 855 numbers.

If you have been keeping up with recent financial reports in our industry you know that total industry revenues are fluid and in some cases decreasing. Telecommunications services in 2007 were about $238 billion, compared to about $237 billion in 2006. Revenues for fixed local service providers remained at about $78 billion, while wireless service providers’ revenues increased to about $117 billion, from about $110 billion, and toll service providers’ revenues decreased to about $43 billion, from about $49 billion. One way to get the toll free providers’ more revenue is to release the 855 numbers. We hope the FCC heeds this advice.
