Things have gotten worse and experts are thinking that in the very near future there could actually be no 1-800’s left to get! You should be concerned about the diminishing stock of 800 numbers because it is creating an even higher demand for toll free service, a marketing tool that the FCC says is “proven” to increase business. With 800 numbers becoming more and more difficult to obtain, the toll free 866 numbers are rising in popularity and fast becoming one of the most requested toll free numbers. Toll free providers have recently been bombarded with calls from business owners needing a toll free number and not being able to find one. This makes things difficult for client and providers alike as the goal is to help out.

Government officials say something must be done to offset the problem—this means a possible rationing program and a tough crackdown on the burgeoning black market. Attempts to profit from the illegal sale of 800, 888, 877 and 866 numbers are in response to rapidly dwindling supplies. As with any commodity in high demand, a black market for toll free numbers has emerged in the United States, sending regulators scrambling to control the illegal sales of valuable 800 numbers.
