Toll Free companies often get asked by customers if they will be charged when someone calls their toll free number as a solicitor. The good news is that solicitors shouldn’t be calling toll free numbers and can actually receive a hefty fine for doing so! Another concern is that of prank callers. If you have a fear of someone using your toll free number inappropriately you can worry no more – you get the caller identification of the person calling. If it’s a prank call you will have the proper information needed to determine who has called. Many people believe that a person will not do a prank call if they know they will be known. Touche!

Coordinated by the Administration on Aging, this service may offer free or low-cost legal advice, assistance or access to legal representation to people over the age of 60. The summer concert and event season is heating up, ads are popping up all over with toll free telephone numbers for tickets and information. Many of these numbers are temporary numbers set up specifically for the event. Once the concert or event is over, the number is disconnected. We have had a few inquiries about the meaning of a RespOrg. Well, here it is: A RespOrg is a companies that has access to the Service Management System (SMS) database that houses and controls toll free phone numbers. The FCC established RespOrgs in 1993 as part of the program to allow toll free portability. Every ten-digit toll free phone number is managed by a RespOrg. A RespOrg can be a telephone company or an independent service provider.

We have written here about celebrities getting their own toll free phone numbers for personal use and to promote their “brand” meaning themselves and their image. Just in time for Earth Day, the California State Senate has voted on a measure that save millions of trees by cutting down on the production of phone books. In a 6-4 vote, the state Senate’s Committee on Energy, Utilities and Communications has passed measure that would allow California’s millions of telephone subscribers to opt out of receiving annual telephone books. Phone number look-up on computers and Smart phones is making phone books obsolete and the waste from an environmental perspective is enormous. Supporters pointed out that 78 million phone directories are distributed across the state annually. These paper products duplicate electronic resources.

As far as we can determine, there is still no word about a decision to allow more toll free area codes into the telecommunications marketplace. With the majority of existing numbers already taken, the need for new numbers is imminent. Numbers with the 855 (and 844 and so on..) area codes are being held in reserve for this specific purpose. It’s been a decade since new toll free phone numbers have been released for public use and demand grows every year. It’s time.
