At this point, law enforcement officers and intelligence agencies can seek permission from the courts to enact surveillance of telephone and computers as part of an investigation. They are authorized to do so by the Wiretapping Act of 1968, the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act of 1994 (CALEA), and the Patriot Act of 2001. Investigations involving monitoring phone calls must be specifically for solving a criminal case or intended for national security purposes.

The federal government was shut down for two days earlier this month in the nation’s snowbound capital, but work continued in houses and apartments across the Greater D.C. region. Employers used toll free phone numbers to advise their staff members if the offices were closed and offered all the specifics of the needs of the work day. Then the employees used their work-provided laptops to do business from home. Some companies exclusively use fiber optic technology. Other toll free number service providers still use the less reliable VoIP, which does not provide the consistent connections of fiber optics. In fact, in some circumstances with VoIP, if the power fails, phone calls cannot be transmitted at all.

California State Senator Leland Yee introduced a bill today that would stop doorstep delivery of white-pages telephone directories in California unless a customer opts to receive it. Under the proposal, telephone companies would have to get a customer’s consent before a white page directory could be delivered. The bill doesn’t specify how, but Yee envisions a toll-free number for customers to call. Cleveland and Miami have adopted similar local laws. Telephone books reportedly represent 660,000 tons of waste per year. An Environmental Protection Agency report states that not publishing phone books reduces greenhouse gases by about three times as much as recycling.

The new Google toll free has come customers confused. Here is the lowdown: Google Nexus One phone users had hopes today of being able to dial a toll free phone number and speak with a Google representative for any type of support and question. But, they soon learned that the phone number is only “for questions about your existing order,” as Google’s support page clearly states. Immediately below the newly posted instructions for shipping questions, the “Technical Support” section now directs customers with problems with the phone to HTC, the phone’s manufacturer: “For technical support, please contact HTC customer care at 1-888-216-4736.
