855 Sooner Rather Than Later

It’s hard to believe that the last pool of toll free area code numbers (the 866 numbers) were released for a whole decade ago! And during that decade, toll free phone service has become more popular than in the previous three decades since its inception. It is time for new round of numbers. Subscribers are tired of searching for a good available custom number. And why should they? There are millions of possible toll free phone numbers that could be made available. We hope the 855 and 844 numbers are unveiled sooner rather than later.

Good News Is Two-Fold On Toll Free

Just how many quality custom toll free phone numbers remain available for new subscribers? This is a question that pops up frequently and an issue of constant concern for those of us in the telecommunications industry. With a limited number of numerical possibilities and increased interest in obtaining the remaining toll free phone numbers, the supply could eventually be gone. But the good news is two-fold. First, there are still providers that can supply a good custom number with any of the four area codes (800, 888, 877 and 866) and there is an anticipated turn-about within the next year or so. New numbers (the new 855 area codes) are expected to be released to replenish supplies.

IRS Toll Free For Help

The Internal Revenue Service is using toll free phone numbers in an attempting to fix one of this tax filing season’s biggest issues, a problem that has led 1 million taxpayers to have their electronically filed returns rejected. The problem involves two economic stimulus provisions approved by Congress last year: The $400 per worker ($800 per couple) Making Work Pay credit and the $250 per retiree ($500 per retired couple) Economic Recovery Payment. The IRS is offering a toll-free automated line for checking on whether you’ve gotten an Economic Recovery Payment. Taxpayers can call 1-866-234-2942.

Toll Free Helps North Carolina’s Needy

On March 5, volunteer attorneys in North Carolina will use toll free phone numbers to provide free legal information from six call-in centers across the state. The statewide service project is linked to the NCBA’s 4ALL campaign to provide legal aid to the poor. Residents of all 100 North Carolina counties are encouraged to participate through a network of seven toll-free phone numbers. It seems that every month new ways to help connect to the needy and disadvantaged are found through toll free phone service.

Decades of Toll Free

Toll free service has been available for 40 years, but has skyrocketed in popularity in the past decade. 1-800 numbers were introduced in 1967. By the 1980s, half of all long distance calls were through 800 numbers. A decade later, the FCC added two new pre-fixes, 888 and 877, to address the shortage of available 800 numbers. Then with the supply continuing to drop while demand increased, 866 numbers were added in the year 2000.
