To overcome shortages of 1-800 numbers in the past, 888 and 877 were introduced in 1996 and 1998 respectively. Then, in 2000 the 866 numbers debuted. But toll free numbers have become such a valuable commodity that the stock is once again depleted. Read more here.

UPDATE: The scarcity of toll free numbers is having an impact on telecom businesses nationwide. At&t no longer has 800 area codes available through it’s online toll free lookup tool. A number of other providers have followed suit and stopped offering the 800 numbers to their telephone subscribers.

Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell advised residents impacted by last weekend’s storm that they can call the state Insurance Department’s toll free phone number at 800-203-3447 with questions about claims. “The destruction that Fairfield County experienced from this storm was like nothing I have ever seen,” Governor Rell said. “Thousands of towering trees were blown over while countless houses and vehicles were damaged by debris.” Residents can also visit the state Insurance Department’s website at http://www.ct.gov/cid to get tips for making the claims process easier.
