At a recent conference, toll free phone service was discussed and the general consensus is that there is no downside to releasing more toll free numbers. With a larger supply, there would be a reduction of improper distribution of these numbers–the legitimate service providers would benefit enormously. Business owners and subscribers would likewise benefit because they could get new custom numbers that meet their needs. Domain names could be more easily matched. There are countless benefits and really no disadvantages that any of the representatives could think of. The release of 855 numbers, sooner rather than later, will help across the board.

We haven’t discussed the potential release of the new toll free (855) area codes in awhile, though we are fielding plenty of questions about it. There remains speculation that these much-needed new supplies of toll free phone numbers will be released sometime in the next year or two. But to date there has been no confirmation. As soon as we learn anything new, we will pass it along to our readers.

In recent blog entries we have been educating and advising on how companies, individuals, and government officials are finding creative new ways to connect through toll free phone service. These advancement are proof that new toll free area codes will be needed in the near future. There just wont be enough 800, 888, 877 or 866 numbers left at some point. Widespread concerns about the dwindling supply of toll free numbers may not be addressed anytime soon. According to sources at the 800 Service Management System (SMS/800) the reserved 855 pre-fix, intended to restore stocks of toll free numbers, may not be released by the Federal Communications Commission for several years. In fact, industry insiders say the release of 855 may be put off until 2011.

To overcome shortages of 1-800 numbers in the past, 888 and 877 were introduced in 1996 and 1998 respectively. Then, in 2000 the 866 numbers debuted. But toll free numbers have become such a valuable commodity that the stock is once again depleted. With an estimated five year wait before another new pre-fix is added, experts advise that obtaining a number immediately is essential.

We were asked recently why the FCC hasn’t announced a date for the release of the new toll free phone number area code(s). There are many possible responses and we are not certain precisely why. But one thing is for certain, we hope they do make an announcement about the 855 area codes sometime this year. New stockpiles of toll free numbers will bring opportunities for businesses nationwide. Existing companies and new businesses will all get a boost form these new numbers to choose from. There are rumors that it will be in 2011. We will see.
