Toll Free Helps North Carolina’s Needy

On March 5, volunteer attorneys in North Carolina will use toll free phone numbers to provide free legal information from six call-in centers across the state. The statewide service project is linked to the NCBA’s 4ALL campaign to provide legal aid to the poor. Residents of all 100 North Carolina counties are encouraged to participate through a network of seven toll-free phone numbers. It seems that every month new ways to help connect to the needy and disadvantaged are found through toll free phone service.

Decision Still Pending In Oklahoma

Oklahoma could be the first state to offer toll free calling within its entire borders. The plan is an obvious benefit to those who make a lot of these type calls. The plan is being hot;y debated but regulators who support the idea say the plan would help encourage telecommunications investment, primarily within the state’s rural areas. This is an interesting development and one we ill continue to monitor.

No More Paper Phone Books?

California State Senator Leland Yee introduced a bill today that would stop doorstep delivery of white-pages telephone directories in California unless a customer opts to receive it. Under the proposal, telephone companies would have to get a customer’s consent before a white page directory could be delivered. The bill doesn’t specify how, but Yee envisions a toll-free number for customers to call. Cleveland and Miami have adopted similar local laws. Telephone books reportedly represent 660,000 tons of waste per year. An Environmental Protection Agency report states that not publishing phone books reduces greenhouse gases by about three times as much as recycling.

855? Anybody’s Guess

As a new month begins in 2010, we are still discussing the possibility of the FCC releasing new toll free area codes as a means of bolstering the dwindling stock of available toll free phone numbers. The buzz in the industry is that these new numbers—most likely the 855 numbers–will be released within the next year or so. But when? That is anybody’s guess.
