On the heels of the release of 855 toll free phone numbers, we are already fielding a stream of inquiries about the pending release of 844 area code numbers. While we do not expect the 844 release immediately, the demand for toll free is so high that we can fully expect the new 844 numbers to be released to ease the burden for businesses looking to get a creative new toll free number.

During a recent discussion with members of the Tollfree Advisory Committee, it was agreed that if the database of toll free numbers isn’t beefed up soon, the finite supply of toll free numbers could run out. Last year, a plea for the deactivation of unused 800 numbers resulted in a temporary surge of numbers returned to the main database. But despite these mass replacements, the supply of available toll free numbers continues to dwindle as thousands of subscribers register for a toll free number each day. It’s time for some action.

1-800 numbers are available from large phone companies and from federally approved toll free service providers, Responsible Organizations. Black Friday is just three days away but many consumers do not want to wait out in the cold at 5 a.m. on a long line to get savings on electronics and other holiday gifts. That is why so many retail stores are offering the same deals for shipping. Consumers who call the 1-800 number on Black Friday could get the same savings as those braving those long cold waits in the early morning hours outside the stores.

We are interested to see the FCC’s report on the acquisition and activations of the new 855 toll free area codes. We know that the new numbers have been very popular and that demand is high. The FCC will determine how quickly the numbers are activated. At some point after that, the 844 numbers will come into play. The need is high and even with the new 855 numbers, supplies will soon be low again. The 844 back-up numbers will help.
