The FCC does not play a role in the assignment of numbers to subscribers. However they do set and regulate the guidelines under which 800 numbers can be used and obtained. According to the FCC, hoarding and warehousing numbers is prohibited and punishable with severe fines.

866 numbers are the newest toll free numbers, released by the Federal Communications Commission in 2000 to address the shortage of 800, 888, and 877 numbers. Once consumers began to recognize the 866 pre-fix as toll free, the value of 866 soared. Recent studies indicate that 9 out of 10 consumers recognize 866 as a toll free number. On the heels of an announcement that more than 700 Chrysler car dealerships would close early this summer, Chrysler has announced a new toll free customer service phone number for Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge vehicle owners. Anyone with concerns about service for their existing Chrysler vehicle or who needs information on purchasing a new car, can call 1-800-992-1997 for information.

According to the 2007 Wiretap Report, federal and state courts issued 2,208 orders for the interception of wireless, local phone, or Internet communications in 2007. This represents a 20-percent increase over the previous year.

Any United States citizen eligible for a $250 federal stimulus check who did not receive it by now is advised to call the Social Security Administration’s toll-free number, (800) 772-1213, or contact the local office. The Department of Treasury was to send payments to all eligible Social Security and Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries immediately.

Along with hoarding, the outright sale of specific toll free numbers is likewise illegal. Some crafty entrepreneurs have attempted to skirt the regulations by “leasing” or “renting” numbers. But industry insiders say the crackdown on illegal use of toll free numbers is aimed at this practice too.

Changes in television service are in store for all U.S. TV watchers this week as analog systems are changed over to digital transmission. Anyone with an antenna will now need a convertor box. Named as the new chairman of the failing General Motors Corp., M Edward E. Whitacre Jr. built AT&T Inc. into the biggest U.S. provider of telephone service over a 43-year-career. Mr. Whitacre, of Texas and nicknamed “Big Ed” said steering the nation’s largest automaker after bankruptcy is “a public service.” People who know him say he can meet GM’s need for the type of transformation he orchestrated at AT&T.
