After all the time and money it took for the hands free law to come in to effect it seems that people are ignoring it. Headsets aren’t cheap and don’t work as well as simply holding your cell phone. It may be more of a distraction to hear your phone ring in the car and struggle to find the headset, snap it in, and put it on. Read more on this article by clicking here.

Growing concern about the limited stock of 800 numbers is creating an even higher demand. The FCC cites toll free service as a “proven” marketing tool for increasing and sustaining business. This week we have noticed that many credit companies are advertising a “brand new service”–a toll free phone number for consumer to call with credit questions and for counseling. Many of the ads seem to suggest that this is a new service prompted by the credit companies. But remember our post from several weeks ago that informed our readers that this new service is in fact mandated by law? It is true, by law now all credit agencies must provide their customers with a toll free phone number to provide credit counseling and advice on paying down debt. Consumers, by law, will not pay for this call. It must be a toll free connection, paid for by the credit companies. Look on your next statement or on the credit company website for the number.

If you are considering a toll free transfer you will need to fill out a transfer form and provide a bill copy to the carrier you want to switch to. Recently there have been reports of some rogue toll free companies that claim you don’t need a bill copy, or that if a bill copy is requested you should dispute having to send one. That information is inaccurate and skewed and could get you in to a lot of trouble. Many have lost their toll free numbers in a port process by not going with a reputable provider that requests ports legally. Get more information here.

For several months now, industry insiders have been advising anyone looking for a toll free number to secure one immediately. The warnings are apparently sinking in– applications for 800 numbers are at an all-time high as subscribers try to obtain a number while there are still some remaining.
Making the situation worse, hopes that the new 855 numbers would soon be released have been dashed as insiders report the launch of the numbers may be held off until 2011. Meanwhile more than two-thirds of available numbers have been taken and millions of new numbers are being registered each year.

The federal government rationed coveted 800 numbers in 1995 until the new 888 area code was introduced a year later. Industry insiders are eagerly awaiting the outcome of this latest rationing proposal. Telecommunications experts are reportedly concerned that a toll free number ration could delay new phone service applications in the midst of one of the worst U.S. economic downturns in decades. New business owners are often clueless about the toll free industry and have found it difficult in past times to get a toll free up and running in times of rationing – and they’re hard pressesd to find out why. By a narrow defeat, telecommunications insiders say a proposal to ration the limited supply of existing toll free numbers has suffered a loss at 800 Services management System (SMS/800).
Rumors that a rationing program for the few remaining 800 numbers was imminent circulated through the telecommunications industry earlier this month. Supplies of 800, 888, 877, and 866 numbers are so depleted that availability is at an all-time low. But some say rationing the numbers, as the federal government did in 1995, is not the answer and could have a negative impact on the business community.

With a limited number of toll free possibilities, the finite numerical supply is nearly expended. Companies like AT&T and Verizon can quickly secure a number for any subscriber, then offer low rates, a variety of services and reliable fiber optic connections. There are also other providers that offer specialty toll free service at a lower cost – do your research as many do not use fiber optics, therefore diminishing call quality.
