The Hollywood Reporter has announced that movie moguls in both Hollywood and Bollywood are joining forces to fight movie piracy, using a toll free telephone number. The recently formed group between Hollywood and Bollywood to battle piracy will now be known as the Alliance Against Copyright Theft, and this week announced a toll free anti-piracy hotline. The AACT will launch the toll free hotline to report piracy. The anti-piracy hotline will allow people to register their piracy complaints without revealing their identity by calling the toll free phone number.

With more than 8,000 toll free numbers registered each day, the supply of available numbers is quickly depleting. This scarcity is causing a rush to obtain new toll free numbers or obtain disconnected numbers returned back to the system.
Toll free numbers were introduced in 1967. By the 1980s, nearly half of all long distance calls would be toll free. Today, 98 percent of adults say they regularly use toll free numbers. Meanwhile, the supply of 800, 888, 877, and 866 numbers are at an all-time low.

Signing a long-term contract with a toll free carrier could prevent you from switching providers if you end up dissatisfied with the service or fees. Toll free numbers have been portable since 1991—this means you have the ability to switch carriers and “port” your number, in other words take it with you. All toll free customers should be aware that signing a long-term contract could be detrimental. There are plenty of carriers that provide toll free service without contracts or with very flexible short-term contracts.

Using Every Tool In The Marketing Box. Economic downfalls in 2009 and the first half of 2010 has led to the closings of thousands of retail stores and service companies with costly office overhead. However, many of these companies have stayed profitable through phone and web sales. The majority of sales from catalog and websites are still made through toll free phone calls. And these days, large chain stores like WalMart and Target offer shoppers the convenience of buying over the phone. Toll free has helped many retail companies, large and small, stay afloat during this recession.

In 1991, the Federal Communications Commission enacted a regulation that made 1-800 numbers ‘portable’—this simply means the number can be moved from carrier to carrier. (This is referred to as “porting” the number.) The idea was that subscribers should never have to worry about losing control of their preferred phone number if they switch carriers and they should never be locked into inferior service.

UPDATE: The scarcity of toll free numbers is having an impact on telecom businesses nationwide. At&t no longer has 800 area codes available through it’s online toll free lookup tool. A number of other providers have followed suit and stopped offering the 800 numbers to their telephone subscribers.

Any businessperson who has lost revenue due to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is entitled to call BP toll free to submit a claim for reimbursement. It has been a decade since a new toll free telephone area code has been released. The last time a new toll free telephone number was released, stock was limited, interest was growing and the economy was changing. The same situation is happening now and a new toll free area code, specifically the 855 numbers, would generate millions of new toll free possibilities for companies and for personal use throughout the United States and Canada. Discussions about the imminent release of 855 are abundant and we hope that the numbers are allowed into the system soon.

Not too long ago there was an article in the Times about the new trend toward mobile offices replacing the traditional office space. Professionals and salespersons are ditching their expensive office space and running their business from their cars. With a laptop, cell phone and a toll free number, they can travel anywhere and stay in touch with clients. No rent, no utility bill. Everything they need is in their vehicle and with a toll free number, customers and clients can reach them anywhere at any time. When they go home, the whole office goes inside with them.
