The SMS/800 Data Center houses the main database of available toll free 800, 888, 877 and 866 phone numbers for the United States and Canada. The SMS/800 maintains and updates the database and keeps records of the owners of each number. Available numbers on the database are assigned to subscribers on a first-come, first-served, basis. SS/800 keeps records on the status of all 800 numbers, service providers, and call routing options. When an 800 number is disconnected, it goes into what is referred to as the aging process. After several months, it becomes available on the SMS/800 database.

We have been reporting on how swiftly the 855 toll free phone numbers are getting taken by new subscribers, and it has not slowed down. Nationwide, business owners and others are getting an 855 custom toll free phone number. We are not surprised. The market has demanded this for years now. And next, will come the 844 numbers. This question has been circling: Should subscribers wait for the anticipated release of new toll free numbers before getting one? Experts agree that getting one now is the best bet. The sooner any business owner, professional, or entrepreneur gets their own toll free number, the sooner their business will benefit. Better to get a toll free number now, then expand with additional numbers later on when the new supply becomes available.

With so much buzz and volume over the new 855 toll free area code phone numbers, there is already talk that the next toll free area code (844 numbers) will be right on 855’s heels. The 844 could be released within the next 12-18 months. By then, the supply will likely be diminished and the need will be there.

Southwest Airlines currently offers toll-free TTY (teletypewriter) and video relay access, giving deaf and hard-of-hearing customers direct access to their customer service hotline. With this toll free service, deaf, hard-of-hearing, and speech disabled customers needing to call Southwest Airlines or can dial a dedicated toll-free TTY telephone number: 800-533-1305. That number is answered by a Sprint relay agent. The Sprint relay agent relays information between the Customer Service representative and the relay user in English or Spanish.

This week, the Federal Administration on Aging unveils its new 1-800 elder care locator. Anyone who dials the toll free telephone number, 800-677-1116, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time weekdays will speak to a representative prepared to answer questions about government services and refer seniors and caregivers to local agencies that can help.

Can’t help but have noticed how many businesses and not-for-profits are using toll free telephone numbers in conjunction with text messages. For instance, customers can text to a toll free number for many promotional purposes. And non-profits are using texts to raise money. Most recently for example, Stand Up To Cancer is asking donors to text to their 1-800 number to pledge $10 to the cause. Another great way to use toll free in the ever-changing world of telecommunications.

Sales of sought-after toll free numbers on eBay continue even as reports of the FCC looking into improper turnover of these numbers continues. Log on now and you will see listings. A black market for toll free numbers has emerged and attempts to illegally buy and sell choice numbers is increasing. According to regulations enacted by the FCC in 1997, toll free phone numbers cannot be sold or brokered. These rules were approved after the FCC fielded numerous complaints about price gouging for catchy vanity numbers and popular numeric sequences. The FCC reports that anyone caught attempting to sell or broker an 800 number faces significant fines. But that hasn’t stopped brokers from attempting to sell numbers on Internet websites and auction sites such as eBay.
