What is A RespORG?

We have had a few inquiries about the meaning of a RespOrg. Well, here it is: A RespOrg is a companies that has access to the Service Management System (SMS) database that houses and controls toll free phone numbers. The FCC established RespOrgs in 1993 as part of the program to allow toll free portability. Every ten-digit toll free phone number is managed by a RespOrg. A RespOrg can be a telephone company or an independent service provider.

What is the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA)?

As part of an investigation, law enforcement agencies or intelligence services can tap into a phone call or trace the origin of the call without advising any of the parties involved in the communications.

This means that all VoIP phone service, including toll free providers using VoIP, is subjected to the surveillance provisions under CALEA.

In 1991, the FCC required that toll-free numbers be portable, meaning that a toll-free number subscriber can “port” his or her number to a new provider when changing toll-free number service providers.

Well, tomorrow is May, 2010. The month during which that the 855 could possibly be released if the rumors are true. We’ll keep on top of it and let our readers know as soon as we hear any news. The rumor mill is really grinding this week with speculation that the release of the new 855 toll free area codes is coming sooner than we expected–maybe even within a few weeks. Celebs Promote Charity Through Toll Free

We have written here about celebrities getting their own toll free phone numbers for personal use and to promote their “brand” meaning themselves and their image. Celebs are also promoting toll free charity toll free numbers. For instance, on Monday, April 26th, actor John Stamos hosted a Project Cuddle® event to raise awareness for the 24-hour, toll free crisis phone line to stop baby abandonment. Also on hand was Miss Teen USA Stormi Henley.Project Cuddle®, a non-profit charity, is the result of one woman’s crusade to help prevent infants from being abandoned.

Growing concern about the limited stock of 800 numbers is creating an even higher demand. The FCC cites toll free service as a “proven” marketing tool for increasing and sustaining business. In fact, studies show that telephone orders can increase up to 60 percent and word of mouth referrals can rise by 200 percent. American adults report that they make an average of 60 toll free calls per year.

May 1 is just three days away. We are all waiting for more information on the 855 toll free area codes, rumored to be released as early as May. Nothing definite yet but we hope the scuttlebutt is true. New toll free area codes are needed to address the growing demand for these numbers. We hope the FCC unveils the new numbers soon, allowing millions of subscribers to sign on for new custom toll free phone numbers.
