With snow emergencies this winter hitting nationwide, and as far south as Atlanta and Dallas, 1-800 numbers have been instituted in most cities, and counties throughout the united States to help residents deal with weather-related emergencies. Municipal toll free phone numbers are nothing new, but they have grown in number and in use over the past year or so as governments provide free communication for assistance and updates.

This time of year is traditionally very active for toll free service throughout the nation. The mid-winter months include Valentines Day of course, major travel between the Super Bowl, Mardis Gras and standard winter vacations–north and west for the skiers and south to escape the cold and hit the beaches. Businesses without toll free numbers suffer and those with a 1-800 number thrive.

Still awaiting word on the release of the 844 toll free telephone area code series. These numbers are expected to be released on the heels of the 855 numbers, put forth last fall by the FCC. The 855 numbers have been so successful that there is no doubt that the 844 numbers will will coming along within the next year or so.

It’s interesting the rapid growth of toll free phone service in the small business community over the past decade. The use in the corporate world of toll free has remained active and steady, but the use of toll free for small home-based companies and local businesses has been on a steady, fasttrack consistently for years and does not appear to be slowing down. The popularity of the new 855 toll free numbers in the small and medium-ized business world is even more proof that toll free is still growing in use outside of just the corporate world.

This holiday storm on the East Coast has had a trickle affect that is crippling flights nationwide.
