As telecommunications experts, we continue to spread the word about the scarcity of good toll free numbers and to keep you posted about the suspected release of new 855 (and possible 844) area code numbers by the FCC. Business owners should be prepared. With the economy still unsteady, this dearth of available 1-800 numbers comes at a time when economists are advising business owners to shift their marketing tactics to direct response—including using toll free to attract consumers and sustain relationships with existing customers on a personal level. Getting good numbers, with supplies dwindling, is becoming a challenge. The best advice is to obtain a good toll free phone number today from a reputable provider.

The automobile industry is not the first business to use toll free phone lines en masse during a crisis that creates a major sales movement–but at the moment it may be the industry with the most going on. Coming off 18 months of lackluster sales and with Toyota in a tailspin, automakers are offering unprecedented deals on leases and sales to move cars off their lots. Zero interest loans, rebates, monthly lease payments reduced. And their toll free phone lines are ringing off the hook as buyers take advantage of the deals. March is looking to be a banner month for auto sales.

If you are concerned about your federal tax refund is right now, you can call toll free for information. The IRS “Where’s My Refund?” Web page that allows taxpayers to track their government checks isn’t working, so inquiries are being routed to the agency’s toll-free phone line at 1-800-829-1954. The IRS says refund information typically is available 72 hours after the agency acknowledges it received a return filed online, and three-four weeks after a return is mailed. Amended tax returns may take two-three months to process. Anyone who filed an amended return more than two months ago may inquire of its status by calling 1-800-829-1040. Filers outside the United States may call 215-516-2000.

This week we have noticed that many credit companies are advertising a “brand new service”–a toll free phone number for consumer to call with credit questions and for counseling. Many of the ads seem to suggest that this is a new service prompted by the credit companies. But remember our post from several weeks ago that informed our readers that this new service is in fact mandated by law? It is true, by law now all credit agencies must provide their customers with a toll free phone number to provide credit counseling and advice on paying down debt. Consumers, by law, will not pay for this call. It must be a toll free connection, paid for by the credit companies. Look on your next statement or on the credit company website for the number.

Heard from a distraught new business owner yesterday who tried seven combinations for a new toll free phone number. But all seven were already taken. He wanted to know about new toll free area codes. Should he wait, then use his favorite phrases when 855 became available? (his seven first-picks are all very common themes for his type of business so I was not surprised they were taken) Here is the advice I offered him: Work with an established, reputable service provider and find a suitable alternative to use for now. Get creative. Then talk to the provider about how to be prepared when the 855 numbers are released so he can jump on his first pick phrases right away. He is better off with an operating toll free phone number rather than standard service. So if he has to wait for awhile to get his preferred phrase with an 855 area code, in the meantime he will have another toll free number up and running.
