The federal government was shut down for two days earlier this month in the nation’s snowbound capital, but work continued in houses and apartments across the Greater D.C. region. Employers used toll free phone numbers to advise their staff members if the offices were closed and offered all the specifics of the needs of the work day. Then the employees used their work-provided laptops to do business from home. Staffers called the toll free numbers in the morning and were provided all the information necessary to keep government business rolling along.

No More Paper Phone Books?

California State Senator Leland Yee introduced a bill today that would stop doorstep delivery of white-pages telephone directories in California unless a customer opts to receive it. Under the proposal, telephone companies would have to get a customer’s consent before a white page directory could be delivered. The bill doesn’t specify how, but Yee envisions a toll-free number for customers to call. Cleveland and Miami have adopted similar local laws. Telephone books reportedly represent 660,000 tons of waste per year. An Environmental Protection Agency report states that not publishing phone books reduces greenhouse gases by about three times as much as recycling.

Remind Contacts To Research Providers

It is important that those of us in the industry remember, and remind all our contacts, to carefully research toll free phone service providers. Make sure they are legit and established. And always remember that under federal law anyone can always transfer or “port” a number to another provider that can offer better rates, more flexible plans, and an array of features. There is no reason to settle for substandard service when a number can be transferred. A good service provider will help, wont charge exorbitant fees, and will do most of the work. This good service benefits the entire industry.

Toll-free Portioning Proposal Denied at SMS800.

By a narrow defeat, telecommunications insiders say a proposal to ration the limited supply of existing toll free numbers has suffered a loss at 800 Services management System (SMS/800).

Rumors that a rationing program for the few remaining 800 numbers was imminent circulated through the telecommunications industry earlier this month. Supplies of 800, 888, 877, and 866 numbers are so depleted that availability is at an all-time low. But some say rationing the numbers, as the federal government did in 1995, is not the answer and could have a negative impact on the business community.
