When a 1-800 number is disconnected and cooled-off, it is returned to the database and becomes instantly in demand. Waiting for a “perfect” retired number is a mistake. Only a small percentage of used numbers become available each year; and new unused numbers are going fast. The most cost effective and efficient way to secure a toll free number is to contact a reputable service provider such as the ones listed on https://smsgov.com/companies/ for example. With these types of services, securing a number can be completed by phone or on the website in just minutes.

California State Senator Leland Yee introduced a bill today that would stop doorstep delivery of white-pages telephone directories in California unless a customer opts to receive it. Under the proposal, telephone companies would have to get a customer’s consent before a white page directory could be delivered. The bill doesn’t specify how, but Yee envisions a toll-free number for customers to call. Cleveland and Miami have adopted similar local laws. Telephone books reportedly represent 660,000 tons of waste per year. An Environmental Protection Agency report states that not publishing phone books reduces greenhouse gases by about three times as much as recycling.

By a narrow defeat, telecommunications insiders say a proposal to ration the limited supply of existing toll free numbers has suffered a loss at 800 Services management System (SMS/800).
Rumors that a rationing program for the few remaining 800 numbers was imminent circulated through the telecommunications industry earlier this month. Supplies of 800, 888, 877, and 866 numbers are so depleted that availability is at an all-time low. But some say rationing the numbers, as the federal government did in 1995, is not the answer and could have a negative impact on the business community.

Recent reports have referred to the situation as the ‘the perfect storm” meaning the shortage of numbers, the soaring demand, and the failure of the federal government to release reserved numbers have all collided to create a situation in which rationing, an embargo or even a complete depletion of 800 numbers is possible.
