On the heels of the release of 855 toll free phone numbers, we are already fielding a stream of inquiries about the pending release of 844 area code numbers. While we do not expect the 844 release immediately, the demand for toll free is so high that we can fully expect the new 844 numbers to be released to ease the burden for businesses looking to get a creative new toll free number.

After years of dealing with a depleted stock, toll free telephone numbers are now bolstered, thanks to the release of the new 855 toll free area code numbers. But the choice numbers are going quickly so once again the supply is diminishing. With at least a year to wait for the new 844 numbers, the chance is now to get a premium 855 toll free number. Before long, the 855 numbers will, too, be in short supply.

In recent years, members of the Tollfree Advisory Committee at SMSGOV.com have been repeatedly warning of the decline of available toll free phone numbers. To offset the anticipated impact of this scarcity of 1-800 numbers, the Tollfree Advisory Committee strongly recommended the release by the FCC of the reserved toll free area codes in 2010. And that happened! The 855 numbers were released last month and we are now awaiting the 844 numbers.

We have been reporting on how swiftly the 855 toll free phone numbers are getting taken by new subscribers, and it has not slowed down. Nationwide, business owners and others are getting an 855 custom toll free phone number. We are not surprised. The market has demanded this for years now. And next, will come the 844 numbers. With so much buzz and volume over the new 855 toll free area code phone numbers, there is already talk that the next toll free area code (844 numbers) will be right on 855’s heels. The 844 could be released within the next 12-18 months. By then, the supply will likely be diminished and the need will be there.

It remains a mystery when the reserved toll free area codes will be released to address the shortage of toll free numbers. The addition of the reserved 855 and 844 area codes would bolster the depleted stock of and ease the burden within the industry. New area codes released in the 1990s temporarily fortified the existing toll free stock, allowing millions of businesses to secure profitable 1-800 numbers. It’s time to do that again.
