Another interesting and creative use for toll free phone numbers–This is according to Nooga.com:
Starting yesterday, drivers are able to pay for parking in downtown CARTA lots using their cell phones. Chattanooga is the first city in Tennessee to adopt technology made available by Parkmobile, a global company seeking to bring innovative technologies to the simple concept of paid parking.
The service, which is offered free of charge to the city, will require drivers to pay an extra 35 cent service charge for every transaction made using the technology. Parking can purchase time through a smartphone app, or by calling a toll free number.

With the announcement that new domain names will be allowed next January–we no longer have to stick with .com or .org etc–it reminds us how this will open up a whole new world of advertising and marketing options, in a similar way that new toll free telephone area codes open up telecommunications marketing possibilities. The new domains will allow for example, IBM to end their site name with .IBM. (www. technology.ibm for example….) We agree that giving more options to businesses and to the consumer will help all types of companies.

The Red Cross has instituted a new 1-800 number that will make it easier for people to reach their loved ones in active military service. Starting Monday, June 13 members of the military and their families can utilize the toll free telephone number 1-877-272-7337 to send a message to service personnel in an emergency. Currently, dialing this toll free number only works for families living at military installations. But thanks to the Red Cross, this changes on Monday.

In San Diego today, 3,100 Team in Training runners joined forces in a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Together, they raised $9 million for LLS. The city residents and other supporters came out in force to watch the runners, lining the streets, many of which were closed from downtown to Sea World to accommodate the marathoners. Gas prices nationwide dipped this week and are expected to continue to drop through the Memorial Day weekend, prompting more holiday travel than initially expected. And along with these travel plans, we expect to see a boon in toll free telephone number usage this week. 1-800 numbers will be used to make plans for hotels, air travel, and for tickets to shows and major league baseball games. Toll free and travel plans go hand in hand and with the (slight) decrease in gasoline prices this week, Memorial Day travel plans are on the rise.
