866 numbers are the newest toll free numbers, released by the Federal Communications Commission in 2000 to address the shortage of 800, 888, and 877 numbers. Once consumers began to recognize the 866 pre-fix as toll free, the value of 866 soared. Recent studies indicate that 9 out of 10 consumers recognize 866 as a toll free number. The 866 numbers are more popular then ever before, increasing in demand every day.

Senate Floor Amendments of 4/23/07 clarify that no person
under the age of 18 years, regardless of whether or not
that person possesses a valid driver’s license or permit,
may use a wireless data device while operating a motor
vehicle.

In recent blog entries we have been educating and advising on how companies, individuals, and government officials are finding creative new ways to connect through toll free phone service. These advancement are proof that new toll free area codes will be needed in the near future. There just wont be enough 800, 888, 877 or 866 numbers left at some point. We hope the 855 numbers are released within the next year.

SB 1613, Simitian Vehicles: wireless telephones.
Under existing law, motor vehicle operation is regulated, and
drivers must follow many legal requirements or face criminal
sanctions. Under existing law, it is a crime for a person to drive a
schoolbus or transit vehicle while using a wireless telephone, except

The FCC does not play a role in the assignment of numbers to subscribers. However they do set and regulate the guidelines under which 800 numbers can be used and obtained. According to the FCC, hoarding and warehousing numbers is prohibited and punishable with severe fines.

Minnesota dentists will provide free dental care to needy children next month at nearly 200 locations statewide. The Minnesota Dental Association is sponsoring this unique outreach effort, called Give Kids a Smile, for the 8th consecutive year. Appointments are being scheduled through a toll free phone number. More than 2,500 volunteer dentists and dental professionals will provide the care. Patients can get information at 1-800-543-7709. With all these new, charitable ways of helping connect through toll free service, the new 855 area codes will be a welcome addition to the supplies of available toll free numbers.

Growing concern about the limited stock of 800 numbers is creating an even higher demand for toll free service, a marketing tool that the FCC says is “proven” to increase business. In fact, studies show that telephone orders can increase up to 60 percent and word of mouth referrals can rise by 200 percent. With stats like that, industry insiders are not surprised by the emergence of a black market for 800 numbers.

Pennsylvania park officials have joined the toll free phone service informational craze. Residents can now call to see if it is safe to go out on snowy park trails. There’s a toll-free number (1- 877-766-6253) for weather and trail conditions. About 1,900 miles of state forest roads and 870 miles of trails are open to snowmobilers statewide. Municipalities nationwide are constantly finding new ways to keep the public informed through toll free phone service.
