We have been aware that churches and faith-based organizations have regularly used toll free to connect with their followers. Now there is word of a new nationwide spiritual community using toll free to bring people together. The Bless Me Network, a Chicago based company has launched a service that allows people to call a toll free number and speak with members of the Clergy. This one of a kind service is the first to launch in the United States. The Bless Me Network, a non-profit organization,will provide counseling and spiritual guidance. Customers call 1-888-9-BLESSME (1-888-925-3776) and then choose to be connected to either a priest or an ordained minister.

Facing an extreme dearth of 800 numbers, telecommunications experts are now concerned that a toll free number ration could delay new phone service applications. And in the midst of an economic meltdown, U.S. business owners could not imagine worse news.

Recent reports have referred to the situation as the ‘the perfect storm” meaning the shortage of numbers, the soaring demand, and the failure of the federal government to release reserved numbers have all collided to create a situation in which rationing, an embargo or even a complete depletion of 800 numbers is possible.

As a new month begins in 2010, we are still discussing the possibility of the FCC releasing new toll free area codes as a means of bolstering the dwindling stock of available toll free phone numbers. The buzz in the industry is that these new numbers—most likely the 855 numbers–will be released within the next year or so. But when? That is anybody’s guess. When an 800 number is disconnected, it eventually becomes available on the 800 Service Management System, (SMS/800) database. These retired numbers are in great demand and the competition to secure released numbers is fierce. Get more on this system here.

The popularity of the 1-800 number, introduced in the late 1960s, led the FCC to add the new pre-fixes 888 and 877 in the mid-1990s. When availability of those numbers became scarce in 2000, the 866 pre-fixes were added to overcome the shortage. Now, eight years later, the stockpile is once again low despite the recent mass deactivation of unused 800 numbers.

Recent studies detailed on news programs and websites indicate that consumers far prefer dealing with a live customer service representative over an automated system or email exchanges. Growing concern about the limited stock of 800 numbers is creating an even higher demand for toll free service, a marketing tool that the FCC says is “proven” to increase business. In fact, studies show that telephone orders can increase up to 60 percent and word of mouth referrals can rise by 200 percent. With stats like that, industry insiders are not surprised by the emergence of a black market for 800 numbers.

Pennsylvania park officials have joined the toll free phone service informational craze. Residents can now call to see if it is safe to go out on snowy park trails. There’s a toll-free number (1- 877-766-6253) for weather and trail conditions. About 1,900 miles of state forest roads and 870 miles of trails are open to snowmobilers statewide. Municipalities nationwide are constantly finding new ways to keep the public informed through toll free phone service.
