The millions of new combinations that will become available when the 855 toll free area codes are released by the FCC will help business owners nationwide get creative custom phone numbers. Plus, the 855 toll free area code telephone numbers will open the doors to match millions of new domain with toll free numbers. Business owners who do not have the ability to match their domain name with their toll free phone number because the 800, 888, 877, and 866 combos are taken, will now have plenty of new options. We hear that the 855 numbers could be set free within months.

In 1991, the Federal Communications Commission enacted a regulation that made 1-800 numbers ‘portable’—this simply means the number can be moved from carrier to carrier. (This is referred to as “porting” the number.) The idea was that subscribers should never have to worry about losing control of their preferred phone number if they switch carriers and they should never be locked into inferior phone service.

To overcome severe shortages of available 800, 888, 877, and 866 numbers, hoarding of these cherished phone numbers by toll free providers, and also by individual subscribers, has emerged into an unwelcome black market.
