The FCC does not play a role in the assignment of numbers to subscribers. However they do set and regulate the guidelines under which 800 numbers can be used and obtained. According to the FCC, hoarding and warehousing numbers is prohibited and punishable with severe fines. Be careful, do your research, and you will be fine. The “youngest” toll free area code is 866 and it’s definitely gaining popularity because there is a greater number of available words and easy to remember digits under the 866 area code. Once reserved for use as a personal toll free area code, many businesses are starting to see that having a great customized toll free number can be more marketable than having an 800 or 888 area code.

During a major NFL game aired last evening on ESPN, there were 15 out 18 commercials during the first quarter that advertised a 1-800 number. You simply cannot be as effective a business without having a toll free number.
