855 Offers Millions of New Matches for Toll Free and Domain Names

When 855 toll free area code telephone numbers are furnished by the FCC to subscribers–hopefully within a few months–it will open the doors to match millions of new domain with toll free numbers. Business owners who do not have the ability to match their domain name with their toll free phone number because the 800, 888, 877, and 866 combos are taken, will now have plenty of new options.

Hoarding 800 Numbers is Against the Law

According to regulations enacted on April 11, 1997 by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) toll free phone numbers cannot be hoarded or brokered. These rules were approved after the FCC fielded numerous complaints about price gouging for catchy vanity numbers and popular numeric sequences. The FCC reports that anyone caught attempting to sell or broker an 800 number faces significant fines.

Toll Free Public Announcements

Toll free service is the perfect way to convey informational messages to the public. Government agencies use them all the time to provide data, instructions, and information during a crisis. Businesses are starting to use the same method.
It makes sense to put taped informational messages on toll free lines rather than on standard phone numbers. Callers who need information won’t have to pay for the call and employees wont be disrupted to repeat the same information over and over.

Contrary to What Some Would Like You to Think, 800 Supplies Dangerously Low

With more than 8,000 toll free numbers registered each day, the supply of available numbers is quickly depleting. This scarcity is causing a rush to obtain new toll free numbers or obtain disconnected numbers returned back to the system.

Toll free numbers were introduced in 1967. By the 1980s, nearly half of all long distance calls would be toll free. Today, 98 percent of adults say they regularly use toll free numbers. Meanwhile, the supply of 800, 888, 877, and 866 numbers are at an all-time low. More than two-thirds of the available numbers are taken and there are no immediate plans by the Federal Communications Commission to introduce a new pre-fix.

Bill Copies are Required to Port Your Toll Free Number

Recently there have been reports of some rogue toll free companies that claim you don’t need a bill copy, or that if a bill copy is requested you should dispute having to send one.

The bottom line is that phone companies that require bill copies have no liability because they create an environment that has no liabilities; the other “phone companies” create glitches and cause problems.

They Want Their 855 Numbers ASAP

We have had some recent inquiries from people looking to speed up the release of the 855 area code toll free number pool. They want them out for use sooner rather than later. Here is our suggestion: Writing to your federal elected official is one option. The 855 numbers are currently held by the FCC until they are deemed needed for public use. In our opinion, the pool of 855 toll free numbers would be helpful to ease the burden of decreasing available toll free phone numbers and would reduce the illegal hoarding and distribution of these numbers

VoIP & Toll Free Service

VoIP converts voices into digital signals that travel over the Internet. However, it has become difficult to perfect these systems and missed connections and interrupted service are a common problem. VoIP allows the calls to be made from a computer, a special phone, or a regular phone. To use VoIP, a broadband, or high speed, connection is required. If the caller is using a regular phone, the connection is converted to a normal telephone connection before it reaches its destination.
