More Municipalities Using Toll Free

This is especially important in rural states where government offices could be hundreds of miles away. For instance. the The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reducing walk-in service hours at its centers statewide. As of today, Jan. 4, 2010, the DNR service center in Black River Falls, 910 Highway 54 E., will offer reduced counter service however, the DNR has beefed up customer service on-line and with the popular toll-free call center. Residents can call the toll free number to get licenses or answers to questions about rules and regulations. Toll Free Aids Weather Service

With major snow and ice storms knocking out travel throughout the midwest and the east coast these past few weeks, the National Weather Service is relying on their toll free phone service to stay in touch with weather patterns throughout the U.S. Whenever the National Weather Service suspects there could be icy and hazardous conditions, they are asking people to report ice accumulation to the National Weather Service’s toll free number at 877-633-6772. On August 15, 2000, in the case of United States Telecom Association, et al., Petitioners v. Federal Communications Commission and United States of America, respondents and AirTouch Communications, Inc., Interveners. (D.C. Circuit, August 15, 2000) the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit partially vacated and remanded to the Federal Communications Commission the Third Report and Order FCC 99-230. The court vacated the FCC’s decision with respect to four Punch List capabilities: dialed digit extraction, party/hold/join/drop information, subject initiated dialing and signaling, and in-band/out-of-band signaling. The court’s ruling requires the FCC to reconsider whether these four Punch List items are mandated by CALEA, and to enter a new decision in accordance with the court’s instructions.

But all agreed that there is a need for a bolstered supply of toll free phone numbers. Everyone also agrees that the new numbers will be scooped up fast and that the release of an additional area code–in other words simultaneous release of 855 and maybe 844–would be the best way to help the industry and enhance business owners ability to obtain new custom numbers.

Don’t Lose Customers

Many businesses show a significant decline in business when a local area code changes. Many growing counties and areas needing to split an area code in to two or more are generally facing several setbacks. One of the major ones being that, since the area is growing in population, similar companies can start to provide more competition. Area code splits are difficult if you do not have a toll free number. With a toll free number an area code split makes no difference. Without one, companies have to go through the trials and tribulations of misprinted ads, phone listings, business cards, not mention an existing customer trying to reach you using an old area code only to find out that it’s now disconnected!
