As the industry waits for news on when the 855 toll free area code numbers will be available, we keep getting the same question over….How many existing toll free numbers are obtained each week that passes? There is no absolute figure but best we can figure about 8,000 toll free phone number are taken each day so we figure roughly 50,000 a week. Far less are being returned to the system and no new numbers have been made available. This means that there is a growing demand, but no new stock. Eventually, the stock will be so limited that it will stall the industry. That is why we are advocating for the release of the 855 area codes which will allow millions of additional options for toll free subscribers.

Questions have arisen about the role of the 800 Services Management System. This is how it works: the SMS/800 management team works with toll free service providers and with the owners and operators of the 800 numbers. The SMS/800 team is comprised of a representative of each of the Bell Operating Companies. The team has final authority on all issues that arise at SMS/800.

The FCC has been clamping down on violations of Section 251 (e) of the Communications Act of 1934, which prohibits the warehousing and hoarding of numbers. To ensure that toll free numbers are distributed in a fair and equitable way, the FCC is taking a close look at suspect activity. Recently they threatened an $11,000 daily fine to the owners of a California company for improper toll free use. This followed a string of unrelated instances, including at least one owner’s attempt to sell his numbers on eBay.

Each day that passes chips away at the remaining stock of toll free area code telephone numbers–a big commodity in the business world. It is September 2010 and we have been reporting for years on the dwindling supply of toll free numbers as thousands of new subscribers sign on daily for their own 1-800 number. Yet, we still wait to hear official word on the release of millions of new toll free numbers with an 855 area code. It appears to be happening soon-we hope within the next year at the latest. With 800 numbers bursting in popularity while the supply of available numbers shrinks, insiders say the number of daily applications could double by the end of the year.
For several months now, industry insiders have been advising anyone looking for a toll free number to secure one immediately. The warnings are apparently sinking in– applications for 800 numbers are at an all-time high as subscribers try to obtain a number while there are still some remaining.

The debate about toll free phone service continues. There has been a lot of discussion about concerns that the supply of available 1-800 numbers is nearly exhausted. There have not been any new toll free numbers introduced in the past nine years and an estimated 8,000 numbers or so are assigned each day. With demand high and supplies low telecommunications leaders are worried that this will create a real economic problem for United States businesses. Others argue that the problem is not too bad, yet. The debate continues.

Toll free phone numbers will be in full force tomorrow night as hundreds of celebrities come together for the second Stand Up To Cancer telethon airing simultaneously on a dozen TV stations. Every penny donated goes to cancer research.

A recent plea for the deactivation of unused 800 numbers resulted in a surge of numbers returned to the main database. But despite these mass replacements, the supply of available toll free numbers continues to dwindle as thousands of subscribers register for a 1- 800 number each day.
