Rationing is not a new concept. After 800 numbers ran dry in 1995 the federal government rationed numbers until the 888 numbers were launched a year later. The rationing of toll free numbers could a tighter squeeze on U.S. businesses, already in trouble with a shaky economy. Toll free service is essential for new companies, start-ups and any business trying to get a competitive edge. Insiders are concerned that if the existing available 800 numbers are rationed, some businesses could be doomed.

New Delhi, India – MTNL Launches 3G Services in New Delhi, MTNL 3G Launch, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited third Generation
The state owned telecom operator, MTNL is going to offer 3G phone services. MTNL will offer the 3G high-speed data mobile phone free services initially to its high-spending mobile customers for a period of two months on a trial basis.
The 3G service of MTNL is expected to be launched by Dr Manmohan Singh, during the Indian Telecom Summit in New Delhi.
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited/MTNL will launch the 3G service in Delhi followed by Mumbai in two months. The network for roll out of 3G services in Delhi is not fully complete yet that is the reason why the 3rd generation service will be restricted initially to the New Delhi Municipal Corporation/NDMC area and National Capital Region of Gurgaon.

Will the possible release of the new 855 toll free phone numbers help curb the growing black market and illegal hoarding practices? The FCC began investigating hoarding of 800 numbers over a decade ago. These improper practices continues to grow along with the skyrocketing popularity of toll free services. Hoarding by individual subscribers is lillegal. A subscriber may not acquire more toll-free numbers than they intend to use. By FCC definition, “hoarding” also includes “brokering” toll-free numbers for a fee.
