We know from countless surveys and studies that customers tend to order more merchandise over the phone than by internet or mail order. And customer returns decrease by as much as half if personal customer support is provided over the phone. Response rates soar when advertisements include a toll free number. Studies also show that customers equate toll free phone numbers with high quality services and products. Toll free phone numbers–especially a vanity number that matches a brand name or image–-sends a message that a product and service are of superior quality to those of a competitor.

Are Bill Copies Mandatory for Toll Free Porting?

If the phone company doesn’t have safe procedures for verifying the end-user of a toll free phone number before they begin transferring it, then it would be YOUR toll free number being put at risk. What if someone tries to transfer YOUR 1-800 number without your consent either on purpose or on accident, if the phone company doesn’t verify the bill copy, the phone company could be held liable for damages, AND it could severely disrupt the business of the toll-free user and their callers. No legitimate phone company wants to be a part of causing that, it’s an all around bad situation for everybody. The bottom line is that phone companies that require bill copies have no liability because they create an environment that has no liabilities; the other “phone companies” create glitches and cause problems.

IRS Toll Free For Help

The Internal Revenue Service is using toll free phone numbers in an attempting to fix one of this tax filing season’s biggest issues, a problem that has led 1 million taxpayers to have their electronically filed returns rejected. The problem involves two economic stimulus provisions approved by Congress last year: The $400 per worker ($800 per couple) Making Work Pay credit and the $250 per retiree ($500 per retired couple) Economic Recovery Payment. The IRS is offering a toll-free automated line for checking on whether you’ve gotten an Economic Recovery Payment. Taxpayers can call 1-866-234-2942.

Is the Hands-Free Law Being Ignored?

After all the time and money it took for the hands free law to come in to effect it seems that people are ignoring it. Headsets aren’t cheap and don’t work as well as simply holding your cell phone. Talk of Rationing Amendment Abounds

Growing concern about the limited stock of 800 numbers is creating an even higher demand. The FCC cites toll free service as a “proven” marketing tool for increasing and sustaining business. In fact, studies show that telephone orders can increase up to 60 percent and word of mouth referrals can rise by 200 percent. American adults report that they make an average of 60 toll free calls per year.

Credit Counseling With Toll Free

This week we have noticed that many credit companies are advertising a “brand new service”–a toll free phone number for consumer to call with credit questions and for counseling. Many of the ads seem to suggest that this is a new service prompted by the credit companies. But remember our post from several weeks ago that informed our readers that this new service is in fact mandated by law? It is true, by law now all credit agencies must provide their customers with a toll free phone number to provide credit counseling and advice on paying down debt. Consumers, by law, will not pay for this call. It must be a toll free connection, paid for by the credit companies. Look on your next statement or on the credit company website for the number.

Get the Skinny on Toll Free Porting

If you are considering a toll free transfer you will need to fill out a transfer form and provide a bill copy to the carrier you want to switch to. Recently there have been reports of some rogue toll free companies that claim you don’t need a bill copy, or that if a bill copy is requested you should dispute having to send one. That information is inaccurate and skewed and could get you in to a lot of trouble. Many have lost their toll free numbers in a port process by not going with a reputable provider that requests ports legally. Get more information here.
